10 Wholistic Strategies to Overcome Emotional Pain

According to the CDC, approximately 19% of Americans report feeling “depressed, down, or hopeless” in any given week. Yet, only about 6% of people report getting treatment for their depression.

Emotional pain is something that every one of us experiences at one time or another. No matter what has caused your emotional pain, it is important to know that there are wholistic strategies you can use to overcome it.

Here are 10 Wholistic strategies you can practice to overcome emotional pain.

Eat Healthfully

While people tend to think of food in terms of what it does for their bodies, food can also contribute to emotional and mental well-being. In fact, your favorite food can help you cope with emotional pain.

When feeling low, eating your favorite food can help boost your mood. When you eat food that is comfort food to you, for instance, ice cream, pizza, chocolate cake, or even a favorite sandwich, your mood improves instantly.

Practice Healing Therapy

The practice of healing therapy is an effective way to overcome emotional pain. This is the type of therapy that uses various healing techniques to make a person feel comfortable and relaxed.

The healing therapy can be accomplished by meditation, yoga, regular exercises, and mindfulness.

Get Enough Sleep

You may have heard this time and again that healthy sleep habits lead to a better mood, a healthier body, and better health in general. Getting enough sleep affects our mood, our ability to manage stress, and our ability to cope with emotions.  An inadequate amount of sleep can lead to frustration, irritation, or unhappiness.

Try getting at least 7-8 hours for good physical and emotional health.

Control Your Fear

We all have fear and it’s very normal to feel like that especially when dealing with emotional pain. When dealing with pain, people tend to have various fears like fear of loss, or fear of starting a new life, or fear of facing other people, etc.

However, if you are strong enough to control these fears, you will definitely overcome your pain as well. Whenever you feel any fear, start distracting your mind and tell yourself that you are strong enough to deal with this.

Start Journaling

One of the best ways to overcome emotional pain and move past is to express what you’re feeling through journaling. Writing down your emotions allows you to get thoughts and feelings out of your head. It is an effective tool to illuminate your inner thoughts and feelings and the simplest way to get honest about what you are feeling.

Value Yourself

The worst kind of pain is the pain you inflict on yourself. When you are stuck in a cycle of self-loathing and negative thoughts, it can be hard to believe that you deserve to be happy.

If you feel like you have lost your way, it’s important to remind yourself you are loved and valued. Don’t listen to the voices in your head that tell you you’re not good enough. Learn to accept your flaws and celebrate your strengths.

This is your life, and you have the ability to make your own choices.

Learn to Say No

Saying no is difficult.

It takes a lot of energy and effort to say no. Things get worse when you are asked to do something you do not have the bandwidth to handle. We often think that it is good to handle every stuff that is thrown our way. But, this is the very point where we start to make mistakes, get stressed out and overwhelmed, and things start to fall apart.

When you are asked to do something for which you do not have time, it is easy to say, “yes,” but saying no is better for everyone.

Practice Forgiveness

Forgiveness does not mean that you forget what happened or that you let the person who hurt you off the hook. Rather, it means you’re letting go of your feelings of anger and hurt. You are letting go of your desire for revenge. And, you choose to be in peace instead of continuing in pain.

Connection is Antidote

We all have people in our lives that care for us. They want to help us when we are in pain. They want to support us. All that we need to do is just let them in!

Sharing is always caring. And, sharing your emotions to your loved ones will give you comfort, care, and support that you crave for.

Make a Gratitude Jar

People who express gratitude can cope with emotional pain in a better way. Gratitude can help you heal from past trauma, allow you to appreciate the present, and motivate you to make positive changes for the future.

So what are you waiting for? Make a list of things you are thankful for. You can open and read it whenever you feel like remembering the good things.

Break the monotony of the tedious schedule and indulge in these wholistic practices so that you can deal with emotional pain in a better way.
