  • Food – make sure your diet is a well-balanced diet that contains fruits, vegetables, good fat, and protein. The fruits and vegetables will provide you simple carbohydrates and fiber. Good fat is the essential fatty acids that your body does not make on its own. Everyone’s body needs essential fatty acids to work properly. The essential fatty acids can be found in food like potatoes, poultry, grains, nuts, vegetables, fish, and legumes. The essential fatty acids will help reduce your risk of heart disease, lower cholesterol, and improves metabolism, cognitive function, and digestion. Measure your portions. You can find plenty of healthy recipes online so do not be afraid to try different foods.
  • Exercise – exercise should be cardiovascular such as walking, hiking, or swimming. The other part of exercising should be strength training. This does not mean you have to join a gym or buy weights. Strength training can be done by using your body weight with strength training bands that can be purchased in many stores such as Walmart or Amazon.
  • Journal – keep a food and exercise journal. The food journal begins with what you are eating, how much, how often, and what you are drinking along with current activity levels. This will help you get a handle on the types and amount of foods and drinks you are currently ingesting. Over two weeks you will be able to see where you need to pay close attention to things such as snacks, lunches, or even breakfast. It is healthier to eat 3 small meals and 3 small snacks spaced out over your day. It helps keep your glucose level steady which is a must for diabetics. You may even want to add notes to the food as to why are you eating is it meal or snack time and why have you chosen what you are eating. You may find that you are eating because you are bored or maybe because you are stressed. These can be addressed once you realize you are doing it. Always measure your food with a scale for dry foods and a measuring cup for liquids.
  • Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water. Yes, you can still have coffee or tea but remember that cream and sugar have calories and can cause your blood glucose levels to rise. The same goes for juice, especially bad for diabetics.
  • Visualize – you may think this sounds a little hokie but when you visualize yourself losing weight, eating healthy, drinking more water your subconscious will help you make it happen. For added visualizing, use old photos of you at a healthy weight or clothes you want to purchase. Did you know that if you use a smaller plate that has correct portions on it, that you will feel fuller when you are done?
  • Chew slower thereby slowing down your eating. There are a couple of benefits to this; first, it will aid with your digestion and second, it will allow your brain to receive the message that your stomach is full before you overeat. Chewing your food well helps promote better digestion and less gas and bloating. It also allows better absorption of the nutrients as the food works through your digestive system.
  • Get the proper amount of sleep. If you are not sleeping well try some yoga and meditation before bed. If that does not work it may be time for a new mattress. The body requires good sleep so that it can repair itself.
  • Balance – the balance of all parts (mind, spirit, and body) is required for health. Being balanced helps your mood which in turn helps your weight loss efforts. Meditation is a great way to stay balanced.
  • Supplements – you may wish to add supplements that can help make sure your body is getting the correct amount of nutrients. Supplements can also be used to reduce stress, reduce hunger, and provide a boost of energy.
